A good number of people don’t understand fundamentals of how car insurance works.
Car insurance is tied to a vehicle and not that vehicle's owner. (Otherwise it might be referred to as "Car Driver Insurance")
Car insurance exists to provide protection against financial loss in the event of an accident. It is a contract between Insurer (the insurance company) & Insured (you), the insurer compensates the insured based upon the terms specified in the insurance policy. All Auto insurance policies require the payment of a deductible in order to take this risk. Insurance companies do not typically take care of all necessary expenses, most often the car owner is required to pay for some part of the damages incurred (this is all spelled out (in great detail) in the insurance policy). For example, as te result of an accident the total damage might come to $4500 and the car owner’s deductible is $1000, then Insurer will pay only $3500 and $1000 difference will be paid by Car owner (the insured). A typical car insurance policy is made up of a number of various kinds, types and combinations of coverage.
Bodily injury liability: The Insurance company pays for bodily injury to another person due to the negligent operation of the vehicle. The insurer pays even if the damage is caused by any other member of the policy owners family or any other person who had used the vehicle under car owner’s permission.
Property damage liability: If any damage is caused by negligent operation of the vehicle, the insurance company pays for that, even if the damage is caused by any other member of the family or any other person who had used the vehicle under car owner’s permission.
Uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage: Provides coverage for physical injury that is caused by an at fault uninsured driver or the injury is caused by a hit and run driver who was at fault.
Medical payments: The insurance company pays the medical and also funeral expenses (as necessary) for the car owner as well as any persons riding in the vehicle at the time of the accident. Insurer also pays even if the car owner and his family members are struck by a vehicle while walking or riding in another vehicle.
Collision coverage: The Insurer pays for the repairing or replacement of the vehicle for damages caused by collision. The higher the deductible or premium agreed to on the policy, the lower the cost is for this coverage.
Comprehensive coverage: Under this coverage the Insurer pays for the loss or damage to the insured vehicle. This loss and/or damage could be due to any number of things, for example; fire, theft, flood, wind, vandalism, riots or storms.
Switching between insurance companies: There are many reasons which force the car owner to switch insurance companies. It may be price, services or area to name a few but typically the main reason is price. The first step is to obtain comparison quotes from few insurance companies. When getting the quotes the car owner should provide accurate information. Select the best Insurance Company based on price and coverage comparison. Also check the financial stability of company before making any decision. Make sure the new insurance is effective the same day your old policy terminates, thus avoiding any lapse in coverage. The important point is never cancel the old policy until the new policy is in force.
